BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Southwest Airlines is expanding its reach at Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport with the launch of new non-stop flights to Phoenix, Arizona, and Nashville, Tennessee. The first flight to Phoenix took off on October 3, 2024, offering a travel time of approximately 3 hours and 36 minutes. The Nashville route will commence on November 3, 2024, with a flight duration of about 1 hour and 15 minutes.
These new routes are part of Southwest’s strategy to address increased demand and reduce overbooked flights during peak travel seasons. The Birmingham Airport has seen a 7% increase in passenger traffic this year, welcoming over 3 million travelers in 2023. This growth is attributed to strategic financial management and infrastructure improvements, including runway enhancements and expanded taxi lanes.
Southwest’s decision to add these flights aligns with the airport’s ongoing expansion efforts. The airport is currently working on a $28 million expansion project to enhance cargo facilities and accommodate larger aircraft. Additionally, plans are underway to expand Concourse C by opening four existing terminals to attract more airlines.
Ticket prices for these new routes vary, but Southwest is known for offering competitive fares. Passengers are encouraged to book early as seats are expected to fill quickly during the holiday season. This expansion not only provides more travel options for Birmingham residents but also strengthens the airport’s position as a key economic driver for the region.
