MONTGOMERY, Ala. — The Go Wide I-65 Coalition has initiated a campaign to expand Alabama’s Interstate 65, aiming to widen the highway to three lanes in both directions. This effort seeks to alleviate traffic congestion and promote economic growth across the state.
Billboards supporting the expansion have been placed along I-65 from the Tennessee state line to Mobile. Lt. Governor Will Ainsworth, a leading advocate for the project, emphasizes its importance for addressing current congestion and safety issues while preparing for future transportation needs.
According to George Clark, executive director of the coalition, I-65 is vital to Alabama’s economy, describing it as the state’s “economic lifeblood.” Currently, only 80 miles of the 366-mile stretch of I-65 in Alabama have three or more lanes, leaving about 277 miles in need of expansion.
The campaign highlights the potential benefits of the project, including increased tourism, enhanced safety, and improved quality of life for Alabama residents.
