Google Plans $1.5 Billion Jackson County Data Center Expansion

JACKSON COUNTY, Ala. — Google said Monday it will invest $1.5 billion to expand its data center campus in Jackson County over the next two years, a project the company said will run through 2027 and deepen its long-running presence on the site of a former coal plant.

The company said the expansion will be funded entirely by Google for its power and infrastructure costs, and it also announced a $2 million Energy Impact Fund for weatherization and energy-efficiency work in the region, along with a separate $550,000 commitment for STEM kits for Jackson County students.

Google’s Jackson County campus is in Bridgeport on the former Widows Creek coal plant site, where the company first announced a data center project in 2015 and began construction in 2018.

In its announcement, Google said the campus has operated since 2019 and that the company has trained more than 130,000 Alabamians in digital skills while supporting hundreds of full-time and construction jobs.

The expansion adds to Google’s more than $2 billion in total investment in Alabama to date, according to the company’s Alabama data center page.

Google also said the site’s long-term power plan is tied to a nuclear-energy partnership with TVA and Kairos Power, though the company said that generation is still in development.
