Madison Woman Killed in Crash Involving On-Duty Deputy

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — A Madison woman was killed early Saturday in a two-vehicle crash involving an on-duty Madison County sheriff’s deputy, according to the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency. The crash happened just after midnight on Alabama 23 near the 323 mile marker, about six miles northwest of Huntsville, and ALEA said it remains under investigation.

The victim was identified as Jacques L. Whitt, 27, of Madison. ALEA said Whitt was a passenger in a 2013 Kia Optima that was struck by a 2022 Ford Explorer driven by a deputy responding to a call for service with emergency lights and siren activated. Whitt was not wearing a seat belt and was ejected from the vehicle; she was pronounced dead at the scene.

ALEA said the Kia’s driver, Mardasha D. Woods, 30, of Huntsville, also was not wearing a seat belt and was ejected in the collision. Woods was injured and taken to Huntsville Hospital, along with a second passenger in the Kia, Hailey N. Tibbs, 31, of Huntsville. The deputy and an intern riding in the patrol vehicle were also injured and taken to Huntsville Hospital.

The Ford Explorer was an assigned Madison County Sheriff’s Office patrol vehicle, according to ALEA. The agency said troopers with its Highway Patrol Division are continuing to investigate the crash.
