Man Charged in Trussville Killing of Auburn Graduate Whitney Robeson

TRUSSVILLE, Ala. — A Trussville man has been charged in the March shooting death of Whitney Harlow Robeson, a 22-year-old Auburn University graduate whose cause of death was recently ruled a homicide by the Jefferson County Coroner and Medical Examiner’s Office.

Jeffrey Scott Towers, 54, was arrested Monday on a manslaughter charge in connection with the March 7 shooting at a home in the 7700 block of Deer Trail, according to Trussville police. Police said officers responded about 9:30 p.m. to a report of a person suffering from a gunshot wound and found Robeson at the scene. She was taken to a hospital and later died, authorities said.

The coroner’s office certified Robeson’s manner of death as homicide on Friday and listed the cause as a gunshot wound to the chest that caused injury to the left lung, heart and aorta, according to Chief Deputy Coroner Bill Yates.

Police have not publicly detailed what led to the shooting, and court records reviewed in recent reports have not outlined the evidence supporting the charge. Towers was booked into the Jefferson County Jail and later released on a $30,000 bond, according to local reporting.

Robeson was originally from Virginia and graduated summa cum laude from Auburn University in May 2025 with a degree in interior design, according to published reports and her obituary. Her obituary described her as deeply devoted to her family and friends.

The case remains under investigation.
