Ensley Standoff Ends with Arrest, Guns, Drugs Seized

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — A Birmingham man was arrested after a seven-hour standoff Friday in Ensley, where police said he barricaded himself inside a house, threatened to hurt himself and others, and was later found with multiple firearms, ammunition, marijuana and suspected opiates, according to authorities and local media reports.

Police identified the man as Eugene Gray, 33, and said officers were called to the Avenue K home after reports that he was threatening harm. Birmingham police said Gray eventually surrendered after negotiations involving patrol officers, members of the Special Operations Bureau and other tactical resources, including a drone.

No one was injured during the standoff, which ended with Gray in custody, police said. Gray was placed on a 48-hour felony extension and was to be taken to the Jefferson County Jail, according to Birmingham police.

Police charged Gray with domestic menacing, being barred from possessing a firearm, possession of marijuana and drug trafficking, according to a report citing the arrest.
