PIKE COUNTY, Ala. — Four people were killed late Friday night when a vehicle being pursued by an Alabama state trooper left the roadway and struck a tree in Pike County, authorities said.
The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency said the crash happened around 11:57 p.m. Friday on Pike County Road 6628 near Pike County Road 6627, about nine miles east of Banks. The driver was trying to flee from an ALEA Highway Patrol trooper before the single-vehicle crash, according to authorities.
The driver was identified as 27-year-old Tykevious D. Russaw of Eufaula, and the passengers were identified as 27-year-old Robert D. Hall of Clayton, 24-year-old Quamay R. Richardson of Clayton, and a 17-year-old juvenile whose name was not released, according to reports.
ALEA said Russaw was driving a 2022 Hyundai Elantra when it left the roadway and hit a tree. Russaw and two passengers were ejected from the car, while Richardson was not, authorities said. All four were pronounced dead at the scene.
Authorities said the crash remains under investigation and did not say what prompted the pursuit. They also did not say whether speed, alcohol or drugs played a role.
