BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Federal and local authorities have arrested a Needham man they say was plotting violent attacks against Alabama synagogues, seizing firearms, a suitcase full of ammunition, and body armor from his home as part of an investigation into “credible threats of violence”.
Jeremy Wayne Shoemaker, 33, was apprehended Tuesday following a coordinated FBI, Special Response Team, and multi-agency operation. Investigators say Shoemaker threatened multiple synagogues across the state and may have targeted public figures in what authorities describe as a major antisemitic threat.
A search warrant at Shoemaker’s residence in Needham, Choctaw County, uncovered several firearms, tactical gear, and a suitcase loaded with ammunition, according to law enforcement. Officials say Shoemaker faced local charges including resisting arrest and firearm possession by a prohibited person, and that federal charges are likely as the investigation continues. Police emphasized that the suspect appeared ready to avoid capture, heightening concerns about extremist intent.
The FBI, Clarke County Sheriff’s Office, Choctaw County Deputies, and several municipal departments responded, crediting prompt teamwork with averting possible “devastating acts of violence.” Authorities and Jewish community groups say there is currently no additional credible threat to local congregations.
Jewish leaders and law enforcement cited a national surge in antisemitic threats, labeling the plot a “sobering reminder” of persistent hate-fueled dangers and underscoring the importance of vigilance and partnership between security officials and the community.
The case remains active, with authorities urging anyone with information about related threats to contact law enforcement immediately.
