FAIRFIELD, Ala. — The Fairfield mayoral race has devolved into a public dispute after losing candidate Micheal K. Williams declared he will not concede, insisting the election was marred by ballot machine glitches and irregularities. Williams lost to Herman Carnes Jr. in the recent runoff, with uncertified results showing Carnes commanding 835 votes to Williams’ 574.
Williams leveled accusations at a press conference, alleging that his own vote was mishandled and that the process was muddled by technical failures. “I will not concede to the early results, I did not lose the election,” Williams asserted. He described witnessing the wrong names appearing at the ballot registrar’s desk, fueling doubts about the election’s integrity.
According to election officials in Jefferson County, the only reported incident was a brief ballot jam, resolved in 10 minutes with all affected ballots properly counted. Still, Williams announced plans to escalate the matter to the Secretary of State’s office, which has promised to refer any credible allegations to law enforcement but declined to comment on individual voter complaints.
Carnes, meanwhile, thanked voters for their support and awaited certification of the results. As of now, the official outcome remains pending, and the city braces for further scrutiny as tensions flare in the wake of the contested election.
