BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — A man was fatally shot and another was wounded late Wednesday at East Lake Park, according to Birmingham police.
Officers were called to the 100 block of 84th Street North shortly after 11:30 p.m. July 16, where they discovered an unresponsive man with a gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead at the scene. A second victim was found nearby with injuries considered non-life-threatening, police said.
Authorities said a group had gathered at the popular northeast Birmingham park when gunfire erupted. Investigators are still working to determine what sparked the violence. Police have not released the identities of either victim as they notify family members.
As of early Friday, no arrests had been made. Officers searched the area for potential suspects, but police said no one was in custody. Detectives canvassed the park for witnesses and potential surveillance footage as part of the ongoing investigation.
East Lake Park is known for gatherings, recreational activity and family events. The shooting has left some residents concerned about safety in the community.
