Alabama Attorney General Raids Six Jefferson County Bingo Halls, Sparking Community Concerns

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Law enforcement officers, led by the Alabama Attorney General’s Office, have shut down six bingo halls in Jefferson County in a sweeping crackdown on illegal gambling operations. The raids, which occurred over the past several days, targeted facilities alleged to be operating illegal slot machines and other gambling devices under the guise of bingo parlors.

Authorities reported seizing hundreds of slot machines and gambling devices at locations including Lipscomb Bingo on Bessemer Super Highway and Pinson Bingo on Pinson Valley Parkway, where approximately 150 and 100 machines were found, respectively. Court documents allege that these establishments received illegal gambling proceeds and operated outside the bounds of Alabama law, which prohibits most forms of gambling except for certain nonprofit bingo games.

The closures have sparked concern among community members and local leaders, who warn of potential economic harm. In towns like Lipscomb, bingo halls have provided significant local tax revenue, funding essential services and municipal operations. Their sudden closure leaves a gap that some fear will lead to layoffs, reduced city services, and further strain on already struggling neighborhoods.

The Jefferson County Commission recently stopped renewing business licenses for bingo halls, intensifying the legal and financial uncertainty surrounding these operations. As the legal battles continue, residents and officials remain divided over the role of bingo parlors in their communities and the broader implications of the state’s ongoing enforcement actions.
