Man Killed, Woman Wounded in Ensley Shooting; Two Suspects Detained

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — A man died and a woman was wounded in a shooting Saturday night in Birmingham’s Ensley neighborhood, and police detained two suspects, authorities said.

Officers responded to the 2400 block of Avenue B about 9:14 p.m. Oct. 24 after a ShotSpotter gunfire detection alert and a report of a person shot, according to Birmingham police. They found a man suffering from an apparent gunshot wound.

Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service took the man to UAB Hospital with life-threatening injuries. He later died, police said. Authorities were withholding his name until his family could be notified.

While officers were investigating, they learned a woman had arrived at UAB Hospital in a private vehicle with a gunshot wound from the same shooting. Her injury was not considered life-threatening, police said.

Patrol officers from the North and South precincts detained two suspects after receiving information about the shooting, police said. In an update Sunday, authorities said both were being held at Birmingham City Jail on 48-hour felony holds pending formal charges. Their names and potential charges had not been announced.

Investigators were still working to determine what led to the shooting, Birmingham police Sgt. LaQuitta Wade said. Police had not disclosed whether the victims and suspects knew one another.

Police described the case as Birmingham’s 35th murder investigation of 2026.
