BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Charlotte clinched a spot in the American Conference Championships with a 2-0 win over UAB on Sunday night at PNC Field, spoiling the Blazers’ Senior Day.
Penelope Rich opened the scoring just seven minutes into the match, knocking home her second goal of the season after UAB could not clear the ball from its own box. Lucie Bertrand added an insurance goal in the 55th minute, scoring for the third consecutive match. Kathleen Ngulefac assisted on both goals.
Charlotte goalkeeper Harlee Head made five saves for her fourth clean sheet of the season.
The win moved Charlotte (9-5-1, 5-2-1 American) past UAB (8-7-1, 5-3-0) into second place in the conference standings, guaranteeing the Niners a finish of no worse than seventh with two matches remaining.
UAB had entered the night on a strong run, winning seven of its last nine matches, but could not find a goal on Senior Day.
