BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — The Legends at Legion Field Battle of the Bands, an HBCU marching-band showcase scheduled for Sunday at Historic Legion Field, has been canceled.
A cancellation notice shared Thursday by the Birmingham Park and Recreation Board said ticket holders will receive refunds. The notice did not provide a specific reason for the cancellation or say whether the event will be rescheduled.
Big Tickets, the event’s ticketing platform, listed the Legends at Legion Field Battle of the Bands as canceled Saturday morning.
The event had been planned as a major Birmingham attraction during the opening weekend of the college-football season, with HBCU marching bands scheduled to perform at Legion Field.
Promotional material for the event listed Alabama A&M University, Alabama State University, Miles College, Southern University, Texas Southern University, North Carolina Central University, Albany State University, Arkansas Baptist College and Tennessee State University among the advertised participants.
The planned lineup included three Alabama schools: Alabama A&M, Alabama State and Miles. Alabama A&M and Alabama State compete in the Southwestern Athletic Conference, while Miles is a Division II program based in Fairfield.
Promoters had marketed Legends at Legion Field as an HBCU band-season event, with general admission, VIP field passes, media passes and luxury skybox suites advertised before the cancellation.
The cancellation comes during a Birmingham weekend centered on HBCU football and marching-band culture. The inaugural Birmingham Football Classic, featuring Alabama State and Southern, is scheduled for Saturday afternoon at Legion Field.
