BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Three Birmingham firefighters were injured while battling an overnight fire at Airport Lounge in east Birmingham, and officials said all three are expected to recover. The fire broke out shortly before midnight Sunday at the business at 1409 50th Street North, and the cause remains under investigation.
Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service said crews were dispatched at 11:24 p.m. Sunday and arrived to find the business engulfed in flames. During the firefight, crews issued a Mayday, an emergency distress call used when a firefighter is in immediate danger, according to one report.
Lt. Catina Williams said three firefighters were transported to the hospital, including two with burn injuries, and all three were alert and conscious when they left the scene. Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service said their injuries were noncritical.
The fire scene was still active as of 1:45 a.m. Monday, and Airport Lounge was not occupied when the fire started. The business remains operating, according to reports, but the damage and extent of the fire were not immediately clear.
