Birmingham Native Chris Richards Becomes One of Soccer’s Brightest Stars

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Chris Richards has become one of the biggest soccer success stories to come out of Birmingham, a hometown defender who went from local youth fields to the Premier League and the U.S. men’s national team.

Richards, who was born in Birmingham on March 28, 2000, plays for Crystal Palace in England and has emerged as a key figure for the United States. U.S. Soccer voted him the 2025 Male Player of the Year in January 2026, a recognition that underscored his rise on the international stage.

For Birmingham, the accomplishment carries extra weight because Richards’ path has stayed connected to the city. Birmingham Legion FC announced in February 2025 that Richards joined the club’s ownership group, describing him as a player who has always kept his hometown close to his heart.

Richards grew up in Birmingham before moving to the FC Dallas academy system, and he later built his professional career in Europe. U.S. Soccer’s player profile lists him with 36 international appearances and three goals, while ESPN reported in late May that he had returned to training with Crystal Palace after an ankle injury.

The local tie is also part of the larger story. Birmingham-area coverage in 2026 highlighted Richards as a hometown figure involved in community-facing soccer efforts, and earlier local reporting traced his development through youth soccer in the Birmingham metro area.

Richards’ rise gives Birmingham a rare national soccer name to claim at a time when the sport continues to grow in Alabama.
