Gunfire Erupts in Downtown Montgomery, Leaving 2 Dead, 12 Injured

MONTGOMERY, Ala. — At least 14 people were shot early Sunday near downtown Montgomery in a mass shooting that left two dead and 12 others wounded, authorities said.

The shooting unfolded just after midnight at the intersection of Bibbs and Commerce streets, less than a mile west of the Alabama State Capitol building, according to the Montgomery Police Department.

Among the injured were two juveniles, one of whom sustained life-threatening injuries. In addition to those two juveniles, three other victims were reported to have life-threatening wounds. The rest suffered non-life-threatening injuries and were taken to area hospitals for treatment.

Police said an adult man and a woman died from their injuries. Their identities are being withheld pending notification of next of kin.

The incident began when a group of people gathered at the intersection and gunfire erupted, police reported. Officers responded to multiple reports of shots fired and found numerous victims upon arrival.

No arrests were immediately announced Sunday morning. Authorities are investigating the shooting, interviewing witnesses, and reviewing surveillance footage in an effort to identify suspects and determine a motive.

The Montgomery Police Department urged anyone with information about the shooting to come forward.
