BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Travelers in central Alabama now have more reasons to book trips from Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport, as airport officials announce a surge of new nonstop flights geared toward both business and leisure destinations. The expansion gives area residents access to 22 airport destinations across 19 U.S. cities, solidifying the airport’s position as a regional travel hub.
Current nonstop flights connect Birmingham with major cities including Atlanta, Baltimore, Charlotte, Chicago (O’Hare and Midway), Dallas (Fort Worth and Love Field), Denver, Detroit, Fort Lauderdale, Houston (Bush and Hobby), Las Vegas, Miami, Nashville, New York (LaGuardia and Newark), Orlando, Philadelphia, Phoenix, Tampa, and Washington, D.C.
New service will launch or has recently started to cities including Fort Lauderdale, Phoenix, and Nashville. Spirit Airlines began nonstop flights to Fort Lauderdale, providing easy Caribbean connections, while Southwest added direct flights to both Phoenix and Nashville, opening new options for travelers seeking business meetings, leisure, and music.
In addition to these new routes, airlines are rolling out special nonstop flights for major Alabama and Auburn away football games this season, offering direct service to game-day cities such as Waco, Oklahoma City, College Station, Tallahassee, and Columbia.
Officials point to increasing demand for both business and leisure travel from central Alabama, with the latest expansion aiming to boost tourism, economic opportunity, and convenience for local communities. Passengers departing from Birmingham can now reach more cities than ever before with a single, nonstop flight—a development that’s helping the Magic City earn its wings as a top-tier air travel gateway.
