BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — King’s Home, one of Alabama’s most enduring charitable organizations, has opened a new thrift store location at 142 Green Springs Highway in Homewood, expanding its impact in Central Alabama with its third store in the region and answering a growing need for affordable shopping options as thrift stores dwindle in the Birmingham metro area.
The nonprofit, known for supporting abused youth, mothers, and children fleeing domestic violence, operates four thrift store locations across Central Alabama. The new Homewood store occupies the former Big Lots space, adding a fresh option for shoppers and donors in the community. Each location offers high-quality second-hand goods including furniture, name-brand clothing, shoes, home items and more, and 100% of store proceeds benefit King’s Home’s mission.
Founded to provide essential services and shelter to some of Alabama’s most vulnerable, King’s Home runs 21 residential group homes across six campuses and serves residents from all 67 counties. Last year, the organization supported more than 275 individuals, a testament to its importance amid rising needs and diminishing options for affordable shopping throughout the state.
The Birmingham area has seen a significant reduction in independent thrift stores over the past decade, with well-known names and local favorites disappearing due to rising rents, consolidation, and challenges faced by small nonprofits. The opening of King’s Home Thrift in Homewood stands out as a positive development, making it easier for local residents to both give and find affordable essentials close to home.
Donations of gently used goods are accepted at all King’s Home Thrift locations, with pickup available for larger items across the Birmingham metropolitan area. To donate, call 205-956-5658, or visit the stores in Homewood, Pinson, and Talladega.
