BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Iron City Pizza Company, a Five Points South favorite known for its eclectic pies and laid-back atmosphere, will close its doors after six years of serving the Birmingham community. The last day of business is scheduled for Aug. 24.
Located at 2005 11th Ave. South, across from the Storyteller Fountain, Iron City Pizza Company became a staple in the historic Five Points South Entertainment District. The area, recognized for its vibrant nightlife, diverse dining options and rich cultural history, has long been a magnet for both residents and visitors seeking an authentic Birmingham experience.
Five Points South traces its roots back to the late 19th century, evolving from a streetcar suburb into one of the city’s most recognizable neighborhoods. The district is home to historic landmarks, such as the Highlands United Methodist Church and the iconic Storyteller Fountain, and has nurtured a range of independent businesses, music venues and restaurants over the years.
But the restaurant landscape in Five Points South has shifted in recent years. Operators have faced rising costs, evolving consumer tastes and increased competition as new venues opened and others shuttered. Iron City Pizza’s closure joins a list of recent changes for the area, reflecting broader challenges in Birmingham’s food scene. Despite hardships, Five Points South has continued to attract investment, with fresh concepts and redevelopment projects bringing renewed life and excitement to the neighborhood.
As Iron City Pizza Company prepares to bid farewell to its loyal customers, local residents and business owners remain hopeful that the district will continue to evolve while honoring its storied past. The restaurant’s remaining operating hours are Wednesday through Friday from 4 to 9 p.m., Saturday from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., and Sunday from 4 to 9 p.m.
