DeVinci’s Italian Restaurant, a Homewood Staple Since 1965, to Close in August

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — DeVinci’s Italian Restaurant, a beloved fixture in Homewood for six decades, will close its doors for good in August after serving generations of Birmingham families.

Opened in 1965 by Fred Koetter, a native of Valley Forge, Pennsylvania, DeVinci’s quickly became a local favorite for its classic Italian fare and welcoming, laid-back atmosphere. Located at 2707 18th Street South, the restaurant has been recognized as a “diamond in the rough,” known for its pizza, pasta, and signature dishes like spinach lasagna and house bread.

Through the years, DeVinci’s has maintained its reputation for generous portions and a menu that appeals to a wide range of tastes, earning praise from longtime patrons and newcomers alike. The restaurant’s casual, family-friendly setting and consistent quality helped it survive changing tastes and a rapidly developing neighborhood.

After 60 years in business, the restaurant will close permanently on August 10, 2025. The announcement marks the end of an era for a Homewood original that has been a gateway to the city center and a gathering place for countless celebrations and meals.

DeVinci’s legacy will remain in the memories of those who enjoyed its food and hospitality over the decades.
