ANNISTON, Ala. — Comedian Katt Williams is set to make a significant mark on Alabama’s burgeoning film industry by transforming a portion of Fort McClellan into a state-of-the-art movie studio. This ambitious project aims to boost local economic growth and expand opportunities in Black-led film production.
Williams, inspired by industry leaders like Tyler Perry and Donald Glover, purchased the former military base with plans to create a creative hub for filmmakers. While the exact terms of the purchase remain undisclosed, the site includes the “Starships” barracks and spans approximately 115 acres.
Fort McClellan, once a prominent military training facility, offers a unique setting for film production with its expansive grounds and existing infrastructure. This development is expected to attract filmmakers seeking diverse locations, further enhancing Alabama’s appeal as a filming destination.
Alabama’s proximity to Atlanta, a major film production center, positions it advantageously within the industry. The state’s film sector has been growing steadily, supported by its diverse landscapes and favorable tax incentives for filmmakers.
Williams’ venture aligns with Alabama’s broader economic trends, as tourism continues to thrive. In 2023, nearly 29 million visitors contributed $23.5 billion in spending, underscoring the state’s attractiveness as a destination. Baldwin County led in visitor numbers, followed by Jefferson, Mobile, Madison, and Montgomery counties.
Governor Kay Ivey has highlighted tourism’s role in creating jobs and boosting local economies. The film industry is poised to complement these efforts by providing new employment opportunities and drawing further attention to Alabama’s cultural and natural assets.
Katt Williams’ project not only reflects his commitment to expanding his influence in entertainment but also represents a significant step toward diversifying Alabama’s economic landscape through innovative ventures in film production.
