SARDIS, Ala. — A parent was fatally shot by an officer Wednesday morning during a disturbance in the drop-off line at Sardis Middle School, according to authorities.
The Etowah County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that the incident occurred just before 8 a.m. as children were being dropped off for school. Initial reports indicate that officers responded to a call about a confrontation involving a parent near the school’s entrance. Upon arrival, an altercation ensued between the parent and the responding officer.
In the midst of the confrontation, the officer discharged his weapon, fatally wounding the parent. The parent’s identity has not been released, pending notification of family members.
No children or other bystanders were injured during the incident.
The sheriff’s office and the Alabama State Bureau of Investigation are currently investigating the circumstances leading up to the shooting. At this time, officials have not provided further details about what prompted the initial disturbance or the specific actions that led to the shooting.
Classes at Sardis Middle School were temporarily placed on lockdown after the shooting but resumed later in the day with extra counselors on-site to support students and staff.
