Birmingham to Host 2028 NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament Early Rounds at Legacy Arena

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — The NCAA has officially selected Birmingham to host the first and second rounds of the 2028 Division I Men’s Basketball Tournament. The games will take place at Legacy Arena, part of the Birmingham-Jefferson Convention Complex (BJCC), from March 16-19, 2028.

This venue, centrally located in downtown Birmingham, has become a key site for major sports events. It most recently hosted the same rounds of the NCAA tournament in 2023 and will serve as the location for the NCAA Women’s Basketball Regional in 2025.

Birmingham Mayor Randall Woodfin expressed his excitement over the city being chosen once again. “Hosting March Madness at Legacy Arena is a huge honor for Birmingham. It reinforces our standing as a leading sports city and will bring significant benefits to our community,” Woodfin said in the NCAA’s official announcement.

Greg Sankey, Commissioner of the Southeastern Conference (SEC), also highlighted Legacy Arena’s importance. “The SEC is proud to return to Birmingham and work with the BJCC and Knight Eady to provide an unforgettable championship experience in this premier venue,” he said.

As the largest indoor arena in Alabama, Legacy Arena has undergone recent renovations to modernize its facilities, ensuring it meets the highest standards for NCAA tournament play. Basketball fans can expect a vibrant atmosphere at the BJCC as they watch the nation’s top teams compete for a spot in the Sweet 16.
