FAIRFIELD, Ala. — Miles College has taken a significant step forward in expanding its educational footprint by signing a purchase agreement to acquire the 192-acre campus of Birmingham-Southern College. This move comes after Birmingham-Southern College announced its closure in May, leaving the campus available for acquisition.
The Boards of Trustees for both Miles College and Birmingham-Southern College have unanimously approved the agreement, which follows a letter of intent signed in June. This strategic acquisition is poised to enhance Miles College’s capacity to serve its students and the surrounding community.
Miles College President Bobbie Knight expressed enthusiasm about the acquisition, highlighting the college’s dedication to expanding educational opportunities and fostering innovation. “This acquisition aligns with our mission to provide exceptional educational experiences and create new pathways for our students,” Knight said. “We are excited about the potential this campus holds for future growth and collaboration.”
The acquisition is expected to significantly boost Miles College’s economic impact in the region. Currently, the college generates nearly $70 million annually and supports numerous jobs in the area. With the addition of the Birmingham-Southern campus, Miles College aims to further increase its contributions to the local economy.
In addition to expanding its physical presence, Miles College plans to leverage this acquisition to forge new partnerships and initiatives that will benefit both students and the broader community. The college envisions creating innovative programs that address emerging fields and workforce needs, ensuring that students are well-prepared for future careers.
As Miles College embarks on this new chapter, it remains committed to its core values of academic excellence, community engagement, and social responsibility. The acquisition of the Birmingham-Southern campus represents a bold step towards realizing these goals and strengthening the college’s role as a leader in higher education.
