BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — The Quest, a longtime fixture in Birmingham’s nightlife scene, is shutting down after losing its license following a series of incidents.
The 24-hour gay and alternative dance club, located at 416 24th St. S., has operated since the 1970s. Known for its techno and pop music, drag shows, and Saturday “Ladies’ Night” featuring lesbian performances, The Quest required patrons to join or be signed in as guests by existing members.
In August 2024, the Birmingham City Council’s Public Safety Committee tabled the club’s application to renew its alcohol, dancing and billiard licenses. The committee cited the need to review whether repeated incidents at the establishment constituted a public nuisance.
Following this review, city officials have revoked The Quest’s operating license, forcing the club to cease operations. The exact nature and number of incidents leading to this decision have not been disclosed.
The closure marks the end of an era for Birmingham’s LGBTQ+ community, as The Quest had been a popular gathering spot for nearly five decades.
