Winston Churchill’s Sunset over Atlas Mountains, Marrakech

It’s odd that so many of the big dogs of World War II were painters. Churchill, Hitler, even Ike. Of these three Hitler was arguably the most talented but Churchill tried the hardest. The painting above has recently been sold at Bonham’s in New York for $420,000 according to Bloomberg and $350,000 according to the New York Daily News.

Still that’s chump change compared to the $2,300,000 fetched for Chartwell Landscape with Sheep, (pictured right) sold at Sotheby’s July 2007 and well below the $600,000 estimate. It’s worth noting that Churchill didn’t take up a brush seriously until he was in his 40’s.
